New landfill rules for VIC and QLD

The Victorian state government estimates that the amount of e-waste (electronic waste) we create is growing up to three times faster than general municipal waste in Australia. To help protect the environment and recover more resources, the Victorian Government introduced an e-waste landfill ban from the 1st of July.

What does this mean? E-waste covers a range of items we all use in our day to day life, including televisions, computers, mobile phones, kitchen appliances and white goods. Through this new initiative, valuable resources like metals, glass and plastics can be recovered for recycling or re-use and hazardous wastes found in e-waste can be treated reducing the risk to the environment.

Similarly, Queensland has also made forward strides in its sustainability efforts: on July 1 the Queensland Government introduced a $75/tonne levy on all general waste – the final Australian State to do so since 2012.

The new levy will encourage increased recycling, resource recovery and will effectively reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, including the more than 3.7 million tonnes being trucked across the border from interstate.
