So we’ve covered off the plastics that can go into your yellow bin – now for the other half of that recycling equation. You might think, easy – anything that shatters matters (copyright Violet Crumble). You’d be wrong. Wine and beer bottles, yes; light bulbs, broken mirrors, a window – no. Why? Because they all have a different melting temperature to glass bottles and cannot be recycled. 

Ready, set, Glass

  • Clear, brown or green glass
  • Wine bottles
  • Beer bottles
  • Glass jars (lids removed)

Bypass the Glass (bin)

  • Pyrex and other oven and microwave proof containers
  • Crockery and ceramics
  • Drinking glasses
  • Mirrors
  • Window glass
  • Lightbulbs
  • Opaque or white glass (think a Malibu rum bottle
