Wanless Waste Management has proudly extended its ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability by supporting Ocean Crusaders and CLIMA in their ambitious Parramatta River clean-up. The initiative launched from Silverwater Boat Ramp, marking the beginning of a concerted effort to restore the health and beauty of one of Sydney’s most significant waterways. The Parramatta River, which winds through the heart of the city, has long been an area of concern due to pollution and waste accumulation affecting both marine life and the surrounding ecosystems.
Hands-on help at the Parramatta River clean-up
The clean-up events culminated in a hands-on day at Haslem’s Marsh, located in the Homebush and Sydney Olympic Park area. Here, volunteers came together with a shared goal: to remove as much waste as possible from the river and its banks – in total, approximately 350 kilos of waste. This impressive haul included plastics, metals, and other debris that pose a significant threat to the local flora and fauna.
Following the hard work, the volunteers were treated to a well-deserved lunch hosted by the Sydney Showgrounds crew, in one of the ENGIE Stadium suites.
In total, the combined efforts over the course of the campaign resulted in the removal of a staggering 3.2 tonnes of waste, filling over 50 cubic metres of space, not only reducing immediate damage to the environment but also served as a powerful reminder of the impact that collective community action can have on preserving our natural resources. The clean-up significantly improved the habitat for wildlife and enhanced the aesthetic appeal of the river, making it a more enjoyable space for residents and visitors alike.
Collaboration the key to environmental change
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Ocean Crusaders, CLIMA, Sydney Showgrounds, the Sydney Olympic Park Authority (SOPA), and Quayclean for their invaluable support in this impactful campaign. The collaboration exemplifies how businesses, non-profits, and government agencies can work together towards a common goal.
